THICC KICK
Big shoutout to Mizzou for winning the banger of the day in the upset over KState. Despite some mind-numbingly stupid clock dealings from Drinkwitz, kicker Harrison Mevis splashed a 61-yard field goal at the horn to snatch the victory. Cool college football scenes.
Big Buffs Energy

Headline-grabbing Colorado ushered the college football world into a 1:30 AM bedtime with their 2OT finish against rivals Colorado State. CSU head coach Jay Norvell poked the bear all week, and it worked for most of the game. Major respect for the Rams for taking the ‘fuck them penalties’ approach to a 16 penalty for 176-yard showing. Talk about poor discipline.
Shedeur Sanders led a killer 98-yard touchdown drive with the game on the line and then dialed it up for back-to-back scores and a two-point conversion in OT to secure the 43-35 win.
CU will crash back down to Earth a bit in the next few weeks (and almost did tonight) but the kids are having fun and the jokes are funny. Long live college football.
Angry LSU
In this week’s preview, I called the LSU-MSU game a ‘how bad do you want it’ scenario for the Tigers and it turned out they wanted it really bad. They absolutely shitcanned Mississippi State and it was a rap from early in the game.
The MSU offense is in dire straits. I have some major concerns with the offense and the Zach Arnett situation at the helm of it all. What a stinky, stinky day in Starkville.
Don’t hold your breath, Bama
Alabama fought off a scare from USF, but oh man how the mighty have fallen. The Tide are playing QB roulette right now and they can’t really get anything right. This feels like the most mortal Alabama team we’ve seen in a very, very long time.
Go Dawgs
The back-to-back champs had a Spencer Rattler-sized problem for a half of football, but Kirby put the fellas in their place and they came out swinging in the second half en route to a 24-14 victory. Survive and advance and all that but we should collectively keep our eyes on that Bulldog offense in the next few weeks.
Heels up
In what was one of the more interesting on-paper matchups of the day, UNC pretty handily took down Minnesota. Drake Maye looked pretty mortal with a pair of INTs, but he also racked up some big plays and threw for over 400 yards.
The Golden Gophers have a stinky offense and things look tough at the quarterback position.
It does not feel like ‘98
The Vols walked into The Swamp and walked out with a pair of black eyes and a busted lip. The Gators defense ate good tonight in their 29-16 upset win over SEC East rivals Florida.
If we learned anything about Tennessee tonight, it’s that Joe Milton is not Hendon Hooker and this is not the 2022 offense.
A Seminole scare
FSU needed all the help they could get to avoid a loss to Boston College on Red Bandana Day. Despite a really fun, upset-y late charge from BC, the Noles got out of their relatively unscathed in the 31-29 victory. I saw a lot of complaining about Norvell after this game…let’s keep our eyes on that down the road. They have a big one next week.
Concerning Cyclones
Matt Campbell might be an exceptional coach, and lord knows he’s done a lot of unexpected winning at Iowa State. But good grief does it look grim in Ames right now.
From the gambling scandal to today’s 10-7 loss at Ohio, things are just in a bad way right now. I wonder if this is the offseason he actually tries to get out of there. Could he throw his hat in the ring for the Michigan State job?
Weird Wisconsin
The Badgers were thiiiiis close to getting their Clay Helton-led baptism at the hands of a scrappy team from Georgia. But Georgia Southern turned the ball over a whopping six times and there’s just no way you can win that way.
I know that totally flipping an offense is hard, but Wisky has looked shaky out of the gate. We need to monitor that as Big Ten play gets going.
Gundy got gutted
Oklahoma State got absolutely dog-walked by a good South Alabama team tonight at home. When I say dog-walked, I mean they put Coach Gundy on the leash and paraded him around the subdivision.
33-7 is an awesome ass-kicking for USA. Good for them. Okie State has some serious QB and offense problems. The clock might be ticking on Gundy.
Backyard Brawl
Do you want stinky offense? I present you with Pitt.
Man, things are bad for them. Phil Jurkovic threw for less than 100 yards and had 3 INTs in their 17-6 loss to West Virginia tonight. That’s really, really bad.
Good for Neal Brown. As long as they don’t totally implode in Big 12 play, he probably bought himself another year.
