Hey y’all, thanks for carving some time out of your week to check out Three-Point Stance. If you’re new here, welcome! It’s great to have you. If you’re a returner, thanks for coming back.

A quick update: I’m adding a new weekly segment to the rotation with Five Questions.

Starting now, every Wednesday throughout the season, you’ll receive Five Questions. Consider this a bookend of the previous weekend’s action. I’ll propose five questions that will range anywhere from very serious football things to meme-worthy jokes.

Every Thursday, you’ll receive The Call Sheet. Consider this your pre-Saturday primer. The Call Sheet will include:

  • Film Review: Words detailing the week that was.

  • The 5-Wide: A look ahead to five (or more) games you won’t want to miss.

  • The Brent Musberger Gambling Guide: A peek at my gambling picks of the week.

Every Sunday, you’ll receive Sunday Storylines. Consider this your run-down of all the weekend’s action. Sunday Storylines will include:

  • Instant Replay: Lots of thoughts and observations from Saturday’s action.

  • The Brent Musberger Gambling Guide: A review of my picks of the week.

Without further ado, let’s dive into Week 1 - 5 Questions.

What songs should accompany Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty and Arizona WR Tetairoa McMillan’s Week 1 highlight reels?

Jeanty’s performance feels very Icey by Young Thug to me. There is just a certain flow and smoothness with which he sliced through the defense that gives me major Young Thug harmony vibes.

For McMillan, the first song that came to mind is a personal favorite of mine, With Arms Wide Open by Creed. Why? It seems as if he spent the entire game with his arms wide open. Ba-dum-tssss.

Is Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia a WWE superstar cosplaying as a college football quarterback?

As a former high school wrestling champ, Pavia can undoubtedly hold his own in the ring. And now he’s mustered up enough gumption to start publicly trash-talking guys…oh yeah, get this guy a contract ASAP.

How concerned should we all be that Pitt gave up 24 points to Kent State?

Things change from year to year, but in 2023 Kent State scored 24 points just three times, twice to similarly bad MAC teams and once against Central Connecticut State University in its lone win of the season.

This feels like a bad sign for Pitt.

Could it be that after an offseason of media pessimism, head coach Pat Narduzzi is finally letting go of the offensive reins so much that he’s fine with squandering a bunch of points to bad teams? What a wild development that would be.

Was Michigan State quarterback Aidan Chiles throwing us off the scent?

Confidence is cool and all but Chiles and the Spartans struggled, barely seeking out a 16-10 victory, and not coming close to the over.

This begs the question, was Chiles just throwing all of us off the scent? It makes you wonder.

How fortunate was Texas Tech to avoid an upset against Abilene Christian?

For anyone who missed this one, the TLDR version is that the Red Raiders’ defense oozed like a sive and Tech almost lost at home to a little ole school in Texas.

How close was Tech to losing? The Red Raiders opened overtime with a touchdown, but Abilene Christian quickly responded. Then ACU did the right thing by going for two, shooting its shot at an upset. Unfortunately, the designed run quarterback draw got sandwiched and the upset was squashed.

Perhaps this was the perfect storm or a bad matchup…whatever the case, it was almost a disaster for Tech and the Red Raiders were lucky to avoid the upset.
