Most people are familiar with the Egg Bowl because of an ill-timed dog pee celebration. But what if I told you the rivalry runs so much deeper than that?

The Egg Bowl wasn’t even the Egg Bowl in the early 1900s. Back then, the rivalry was dubbed “The Battle for the Golden Egg.” The game got its name because of its egg-shaped trophy. And the trophy was born after a wooden chair swingin’ fracas broke out between Ole Miss and Mississippi A&M fans in 1927.
But even as far back as 1907, the annual meeting between Mississippi’s two premier football schools possessed enough lore to make a George R. R. Martin novel jealous.
A few of the highlights include:
A whiskey-drunk loss and a coach who fled town on a late-night train ride.
The night God himself played defense on a game-winning field goal attempt.
The lesser-known first dog pee celebration.
And so much more.
Fast-forward to the 2019 Egg Bowl, a.k.a. The Piss and Miss. That faithful night, Ole Miss wide receiver Elijah Moore etched his name in Egg Bowl history…for all the wrong reasons.
And for many, that’s the end of the story. But there’s much more to it than that.
Because what came next fractured Ole Miss and Mississippi State football. And simultaneously put both programs on the college football map.
But I don’t want to write about it. I want to show you the ripple effect.
Today, my business partner Nick Goodwin and I are launching You Sure Bro? on YouTube. This channel will explore the deeper layers of the sports we love – and the moments that live outside of them.
The debut series, College Football Faultlines, explores the most impactful moments in college football history and traces the tremors they left behind.
Our first deep is live now: College Football Faultlines: The 2019 Egg Bowl
